Although Qigong (pron. chee gong) is one of the earliest forms of Chinese exercise, it is still widely practiced by people in all walks of life. The basis of this art is Qi (chee), the life force existing in all living creatures and flowing continuously through our bodies. Gong means work and, therefore, through diligent exercise we can harness this vital energy, control it and use it for better health or as a component of martial arts. There is no limit to who can practice whether young or old, male or female and it does not require great physical strength. Systematic learning and practice means it can be studied with less time and less energy.
Qigong strengthens not only the muscles and joints but also the internal organs of the body. The practitioner will have increased immunity to sickness, and benefit a multitude of complaints from backache, weight problems to arthritis, heart disease and impotency. It is said that over 500 years ago in China during the Ming dynasty, people were cured of cancer of the oesophagus by practicing Qigong and it is still recommended today in China for patients with cancer.
Another facet of Qigong is that it forms the basis of all Chinese martial arts. Any real Chinese master includes Qigong in one form or another as part of their training. In many cases, Qigong forms part of basic internal training (neigong) as a prerequisite before learning the external art (waigong), to strengthen the body and avoid injury. Experienced exponents perform many astonishing feats.
